Share Your Wisdom
Wysdom is built on the belief that every clinician has something to teach - the tips, techniques, and decision-making nuances that represent the art of medicine.
If you have a case, a technique, or a perspective that could help others improve how they deliver care, we invite you to contribute a Pearl - a short, high-impact video designed for peer-to-peer learning.
All submissions are reviewed by Wysdom’s editorial board for safety, clinical accuracy, engagement, and educational value. Not all submissions are accepted as Pearls - only those that meet our standards for relevance and impact.
The guide and steps below walks you through how to record, protect patient privacy, and create a submission that makes a meaningful contribution to our community.

What Makes a Good Pearl?
We’re looking for short, high-impact videos that are:
- Case-based and practical - centered on real clinical scenarios
- Clinically relevant - with a clear teaching point or decision-making insight
- Structured and concise - ideally under 4 minutes, no filler
- Well-edited - tight pacing, no long pauses or gaps in narration
- Visually engaging - use educational graphics, callouts, or overlays to clarify concepts
- Highlight key findings and anatomy - clearly point out findings using your mouse, cursor, or annotation
- Authentic and memorable - appropriate use of humor or analogies encouraged
If you're unsure whether your case fits, click here to inquire before creating and our editorial team will gladly review it.

Video Guidelines & Structure

Length
-
Target: under 4 minutes(Complex topics can be split into short modules)

Format
- Case-based or technical walkthroughs
- Include visuals (imaging, product packaging, videos)
- Use narration to explain not just the what, but the why and the how

Recommended Structure
A single Pearl typically focuses on one or two of these segments - but the more you include, the clearer the full clinical picture becomes. Together, they help learners understand not just the how, but the why behind each decision, step, and outcome.
- Clinical Case Overview
- Pre-Procedure Considerations
- Equipment & Supplies
- Intra-Procedure Highlights
- Post-Procedure Management
- Tips & Tricks
- Complications & Pitfalls
- Epidemiology/Pathophysiology
- Review of the top 3 papers in the space
Recording & Editing Tips

Tools & Workflow
- Use a mobile phone or digital camera - quality of editing and voiceover matters more than resolution.
- Use tape/Post-It to cover PHI on all monitors in the room (see below)
- Use “fluoro save” or DSA to document what you are doing on the screen. Then record it later in your office either with:
- Software called Loom (or equivalent screen recording software) while you narrate the PACS images using the mouse to point out findings.
- Mobile phone on a tripod to record the computer screen.
* Select “de-identify images” on PACS
- Assign a nurse, technologist, or trainee to record you with strict instructions to protect privacy and avoid filming others.

Intra-Procedure:
Record Only What Matters
- Speak at the bedside or back table (you can use an AirPod or equivalent for better audio, but it’s optional)
- Show devices in their packaging, then explain once opened - or film this part afterward
- Devices and supplies can be filmed later in the supply room, even the next day

Editing Software
-
Recommended:CapCut, Adobe Premiere Pro, Apple iMovie or Apple Final Cut. But any good software works.
- Keep transitions clean, narration concise, and visuals aligned with key teaching points

Protecting Patient Privacy (HIPAA/PHI Compliance)
This is critical. To protect your patients and ensure compliance:
- Cover any patient identifiers on all screens - name, DOB, MRN, timestamps (even on desktop corners)
- Avoid recording identifying features (tattoos, scars, facial details)
- Do not record others in the room unless they’ve given explicit consent. You can blur faces with the editing tool if necessary.
- Adjust demographic details when narrating (e.g., shift age slightly a few years)
- Double-check your video before submission.
Do I Need Approval From My Institution to Record?
Institutional policies vary. You should always check with your institution if you're uncertain.
That said, most hospitals - particularly teaching institutions - include general consent for photography and video recording for educational use in their procedural consent forms. Confirm whether this language is part of your institution’s consent process.
From a regulatory perspective, HIPAA permits the use of patient information and imagery for educational purposes as long as all personally identifiable information (PHI) is removed and the content is shared in a secure, professional setting - like Wysdom.
-
Bottom line:You're not doing anything new as people have been showing patient videos and images at conferences for decades - just contributing to a modern, closed platform used exclusively by verified healthcare professionals and vetted medical industry partners.
